The Good News Is Best Seen In Contrast

By Jane Titrud

“Moreover, they [the Levitical priests] shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.” (Ezekiel 44:23 NASB)

“You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ…. Therefore I testify to you this day, that I am innocent of the blood of all men.  For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God.”

(Acts 20:18b-21; 26-27)

As light is best seen when contrasted with dark,

And contrast works best when the difference is stark,

So too is God’s Gospel the best understood

When the evils of sin are contrasted with good.

For the teaching of death as the wages of sin

Gives meaning and depth to the trouble man’s in.

And telling the truth about sin that enslaves

Highlights the need for a Gospel that saves.

If we only preach God as fulfiller of needs,

People won’t fear Him as judge of their deeds.

But teaching both love and judgment contrasting

Yields faith in God’s Word and life everlasting.
